The Japanese Government uner the leadership of Mr Abe, the Prime Minster, took an importanto step to revising the Peace Constitution after Parliament dendorsing the lawo to introduce the referendum on the issue.
The Japanese government now can hold teh referendum as early as 2010 under the bill so approved by teh prliament.
Polls show that the Japanese are split, especiallyu on the Article 9 of the Constitution, which renoundecs war and forbids th country Japan to have a fullfeldged military forces.
Proposals for any amendments would have to be approved by two-thirds of the both Houses of the Parliament and then by a majority of voters in a national referendum.
Washington has long backed Japan's constitutional revision so that Japan can play a larger military role. Americans thus face a dilemma whether Japan can be a major country in Asia or suppressed to a hermit kingdom in Asia.
