Bill Richardson 6
The dangerous wildfires in California are now burning in some areas for a sixth day. Over
1,600 homes have been destroyed. An estimated 800,000 people have been turned out of their homes.
California needs our help right now.
I've sent three New Mexico fire fighting strike teams to California this week, at the
request of the California Office of Emergency Services. They'll serve a two-week tour
helping to fight the blazes and mop up.
I also made a contribution of $10,000 to the Red Cross, and sent a personal letter to
every New Mexico state employee asking them to give. And now I'm asking you to please give to the Red Cross too -- and be as generous as you can afford to be. Your gift today to the Red Cross's California relief fund will help these unfortunate families get back on their feet.
As a Governor, I know how important National Guard members and equipment are in a natural disaster. The California National Guard is providing logistical support and manpower to aid the fire fighters in the field. But, tragically, they don't have the people or equipment they need -- because President Bush has deployed thousands of CaliforniaNational Guard troops, along with their equipment and supplies -- to Iraq. Right now more than ever it is clear we need them here at home -- yet President Bush still refuses to end this war, and Congress keeps stalling. But, we can continue that fight tomorrow.
Today, California is counting on us.
Join me in making a generous contribution to the Red Cross California relief fund.
You'll make an immediate difference in the lives of the thousands of families who have
been displaced by this terrible tragedy.
I know I can count on you to do what you can.
Governor Bill Richardson
P.S. Have you planted your flag on our interactive map at http://getourtroopsout.com? It
just takes a minute, and it tells Congress and the President that you stand with the
majority who want to see the war in Iraq over and our troops back home.
