Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad has been a key figure in Asian politics for more than three decades, continuing to dominate politics in Malaysia
well after his retirement in 2003. Under his guidance Malaysia achieved significant conomic success becoming one of the most prominent newly industrialized nations and a leading member of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC).
Born in December 1925, Mahathir became a member of the United Malay National Organization (UNMO) in 1946 before getting admission to the King Edward VII College of Medicine in Singapore a year later. He then joined the Malaysian government service as a Medical Officer. In 1957 he left to set up his own practice and in 1964 he became a member of parliament and served for five years. He returned to parliament again in
1974 and was appointed minister of education. In 1981 he was elected President of UNMO and became the fourth Prime Minister of Malaysia.
Mahathir is in Tokyo to address the 14th International Conference on the Future of Asia organized by Nikkei Shimbun. He came to the FCCJ on May 23 to talk about Asia's role in global politics, the world economy, international finance and environmental issues.」
